Let's face it, the internet is here to stay and latest projections indicate that online sales will only increase. The internet has become the haven of many shoppers for the following reasons:
- There are many bargains to be had and comparison shopping is relatively easy.
- Increased emphasis on internet security and secured transactions has made putting your credit card information online very safe.
With these things in mind, we have compiled a list of tips that will make your online experience more enjoyable and safe.
1. Always use a credit card that is designed for internet purchases. You do this by ensuring that your credit card company will immediately remove any charges that you feel were a result of someone stealing your credit card number. If you are going to use your checking account, never give it directly to the merchant. Instead, use an online service that is safe and secure. There are a number of these services out there, but we have had a great deal of success with PayPal.
2. Know who you are buying from. It is a good idea to check out the trustworthiness of the merchant or individual you are buying from. Check out their references, if you can Read their return policy and if you have any doubts, either don't use them or write to them and express your concerns.
3. When paying, make sure you are directed to a secure domain. These will include https:// in their URL. This way you will know that you are on a secure server and your transaction is shielded from intruders trying to obtain your information.
Although there are many auction sites on the internet and more popping up everyday, our favorite is eBay for the following reasons:
1. We have found that they are one of the most reputable sites by ensuring that people that sell there are selling legitimate merchandise or services and they constantly review postings to ensure compliance. Another means of compliance is that other sellers will turn in abusers.
2. You can comparison shop with relative ease. Whether it is in auction or in their stores, you can get a list of similar products simply by searching and using the keywords that best reflect what you are looking for.
3. Each individual has a rating system that you can review. It is a good idea to click on the number next to the sellers name and browse the comments given by other buyers. Also click on the number to the right to see the item that the buyer is referring to. This is especially important when the individuals rating number is low. This is not a bad thing, because everyone has to start somewhere, but if the number is below fifty (50) be sure to check out their track record.
4. The site is easy to navigate. As we mentioned, the search feature allows you to focus in on what you are looking for, but you can also browse by category, which are extensive, if you are not quite sure what you really want. For example: You may be a collector of Disney Memorabilia, but don't know what search words to enter. They have a whole category and sub categories called "Disneyana" where you can focus in on what is available.
5. They have stores that either specialize in certain product types or offer a wide variety. It is a good idea to check into these by going to the stores section, because your search from the main page will only take you directly to auction items.
In summary, buying online can be safe, secure and enjoyable.
